DOW Dow’s was established in 1798 when a Portuguese merchant from Oporto, Bruno da Silva set up a wine importing company in London. The family firm was continued by Bruno’s son, John da Silva who began a partnership with Frederick William Cosens and the firm became Silva & Cosens. The firm continued to expand and build its reputation under the stewardship of Edward da Silva and Frederick Cosens, who were joined by George Acheson Warre in 1868. In 1877 Silva & Cosens merged with Dow & Co. and it was agreed to adopt the brand name Dow’s. Andrew James Symington travelled from Glasgow to Oporto in 1882 to work for the Grahams, and he rapidly established a reputation in the wine trade. In 1912, Dow’s senior partner, George A. Warre returned to Britain and asked Andrew James Symington to manage the Douro vineyards, lodges and stock of wines in Vila Nova di Gaia for Dow’s. The partnership between the Warre and Symington families continued until 1961 when the Symington’s became the sole owners of Dow’s.
