A LECTURE TOUR IN NEW ZEALAND. Twain is keeping to his bed to conserve energy for his evening's talk -- or rather, as he frankly admits, 'in order to placate a new carbuncle which has just started business in my arm-pit'. He thanks the recipient for advice on withstanding the rigours of a tour: 'I had already used a part of your plan, from my first appearance in Australasia -- the 10-minute interval. That interval has been of astonishing value to me. I shall always employ it'; he intends from that evening's performance to take tea or coffee on the platform, and gives details of his dinner and supper times. Twain's visit to New Zealand in 1895 formed part of his extensive lecture tour in the English-speaking countries, in an attempt to pay off his debts. The recipient was a prominent New Zealand scientist.
