Since his title character's passion was the collection of fingerprints, what better than to use a facsimile set of fingerprints from the man who wrote the book on fingerprint analysis, Sir Francis Galton? Galton's Fingerprints appeared in 1892 and Clemens clipped this illustration from the book and wrote a note for the printer: "Make a 'process' facsimile of these for this place. SLC." He added a second instruction underneath the fingerprints: "[If it wont 'process' good, get a cast from Macmillan & Co., London.]" Then, having decided to drop the idea, wrote a final note (with a pointed finger drawn alongside for emphasis): "Not to be used in the book." A rare glimpse at Clemens designing his work.
