CLAUDE, Isaac, attributed to]. Le comte de Soissonce [sic]. Nouvelle galante. Imprimé à Cologne Chez Pierre Marteau 1687 . MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER. [Paris?: after 1687]. 8° (185 x 119mm). 136 leaves written in a a neat cursive hand. (Very light dampstain at corner of final 2 leaves.) Late 17th-century French (or possibly Dutch) red morocco panelled in gilt with a wide border of S-shaped tools enclosing pointillé fleurons, rhomboid fleurons at corners of panels, spine gilt with similar tools, red morocco doublures panelled in gilt with large intertwined S tools and pointellé fleurons, marbled endleaves, gilt edges. Provenance : Stael Holstein (armorial bookplate, Bibliothèque de Coppet ); Prince Roland Bonaparte (1585-1924, bookplate). Contemporary manuscript copy of the first edition, which was published with a fictitious imprint. Intrigue and profligacy characterised the life of Louis de Bourbon, Comte des Soissons, and provide abundant material for this fictionalised biography written as a cautionary tale.
