CLARKE, Asa B. (1817-1882). Travels in Mexico and California: Comprising a Journal of a Tour from Brazos Santiago, through Central Mexico, by way of Monterey, Chihuahua, the country of the Apaches, and the River Gila, to the Mining Districts of California . Boston: Wright & Hasty's Steam Press, 1852. 8 o (190 x 114 mm). Original printed wrappers; red cloth folding case. FIRST EDITION of this account by a member of the Hampden Mining Company of his trip to Los Angeles via Mexico in late 1849. He traveled to the mines of California from Camargo, Mexico through Chihuahua and Sonora to the Gila River in Arizona (then the U.S.-Mexican boundary), arriving at Los Angeles on July 9. Clarke's narrative provides the first description of that route. Streeter calls it one of the most interesting overlands due to the route it describes, previously unrecorded. Cowan p. 128; Graff 746; Hill p. 54; Howes C-451; Kurutz 138a; Mintz 534; Sabin 13393; Streeter V:3169; Wagner-Camp-Becker 210. A VERY FINE COPY.
