CLARK, WILLIAM, Brigadier General, Superintendent of Indian Affairs. Document signed ("Wm Clark") as Brigadier General and Superintendent of Indian Affairs for Louisiana Territory, Saint Louis, 22 May 1807. 1 page, 4to, 185 x 250mm. (7 1/2 x 10 in.), large red wax seal and attached blue silk ribbons at top, a few dampstains, handsomely framed with leather mat incorporating an engraving of Native Americans greeting Clark and an engraved plaque: "William Clark 1780-1838 American Soldier and Explorer Lewis and Clark Expedition 1804-1806 Superintendent of Indian Affairs 1807-1821." Superintendent Clark certifies the peaceful intentions of the chief of the Otter tribe: "From the Special Confidence reposed by me in the Sincere attachment of Tar-Ton-Kah-ha young chief of the Otter, & Son to the late great Chief of that Nation, as also from proofs given by him of his amicable disposition to cultivate peace, harmony, and good Neighborhood with the Citizens of the United States of America, I do by the authority vested in me, require and charge all citzens [ sic ] of the U. States, all Indian Nations in Treaty with the same, and all other persons to treat the said Tar-Ton-Kah-ha ... and his Band in the most Friendly Terms, so long as they conduct themselves well." Documents relating to Clark's treaties with the Indians are quite uncommon on the market.
