Lot of two, includes: Printed broadside, 5.75 x 9.25 in. Jeff. Davis, The Last Ditch. Philadelphia: A. W. Auner, Song Publisher & Printer, n.d., ca 1860s. Broadside features an illustration of Jefferson Davis lying in a ditch, dressed in a woman's dress and bonnet, and wielding a bowie knife; in the background, an African American soldier looks on the scene from behind a fence. Below, a caption reads, "Bress my stars if dere aint Massa Jeff Davis in de las' ditch at last." Printed broadside, 9.5 x 23.5 in., promoting a "Grand Gala Performance in Honor of the National Holiday" at the New Chestnut Street Theatre. Philadelphia: U. S. Steam Power Job Print, n.d., ca 1863. Broadside features an illustration of an eagle with a flag between two boldly printed dates, 1776 and 1863. Broadside lists acts including musical performances and a patriotic recital by "Mrs. D. P. Bowers," to be followed by the main event, "the Great Sensation Drama, entitled the Peep O' Day," which presents "a True Picture of the Life of the Irish Peasantry During the Great Rebellion! Of '98." Features of the play listed include a "Correct and Faithful Representation of An Irish Fair," a "Faction Fight with Shillelahs," and perhaps most thrillingly, "the Scene of the Black Valley! Or, the Foil Dhuiv, In which Harry Kavanagh makes a Terrific Descent From the extreme height of the Theatre to the Stage, upon the Branch of a Tree: Which is nightly hailed with the most Enthusiastic Applause." Condition: Second broadside with spots of water staining and significant area of paper loss at top edge.
