CIVIL WAR]. SMITH, EDMUND KIRBY 1824-1893, General, C.S.A. Autograph letter signed ("E. Kirby Smith") to O.H. Peck, Seuranes, Texas, 7 April 1887. 1 page, 4to, formerly tipped to another sheet, light discoloraton , otherwise in very good condition. The former commander of "Kirby Smithdom," the Trans-Mississippi Department after the fall of Vicksburg, answers an apparent request: "Colin Prestow Johnston, son of [C.S.A.] Gen[eral] Albert Sidney Johnston is the President of Tulane University, New Orleans, L[ouisian]a, where he resides..." General E. Kirby Smith was the last General to surrender in the Civil War. He surrendered his Trans-Mississippi force on 2 June 1865 at Galveston, Texas in the Smith-Canby Convention, and "[o]n his way...to give his personal parole, he heard of [General Robert E.] Lee's arrest and decided to flee to Mexico and thence to Cuba." Smith did not return to the United States until November 1865 (Boatner pp. 769-771).
