A fine tintype portrait of a cavalryman wearing a yellow-trimmed cavalry shell jacket, armed with a rare, first model Burnside carbine, a Colt M1860 Army revolver in his belt, and a cavalry sabre wearing a yellow-trimmed cavalry shell jacket; sixth plate, housed in a half case. A tag attached to the exterior of the case identifies the sitter as John Heavenridge. HDS lists one John Heavenridge, but this private served with the 16th Indiana infantry. Another private by the name of Edwin R. Heavenridge is listed who served with the 3rd and 8th Indiana Cavalry and survived the war. Heavenridge mustered into "L" Co. of the 3rd IN Cavalry, which was part of the "Right Wing," consisting of six companies that were assigned to the Army of the Potomac. It served in the eastern theater for the duration seeing action in most of the major cavalry engagements undertaken by the cavalry corps. In 1864, Heavenridge was transferred into "I" Co., 8th IN Cavalry, and participated in battles and skirmishes at Waynesboro, Buckhead Church, Brown's Cross-Roads, Reynolds' Plantation, Aiken, Averasboro, Bentonville, and Raleigh. The 8th Indiana's last battle was fought in North Carolina at Morrisville. Heavenridge mustered out on 7/20/1865 at Indianapolis, IN. Condition: Housed in half case.
