Regarding return of ordnance and closing out the books (now that the war was over in the Eastern Theater). Return of Ordnance and Ordnance Stores, Co. B, 121st NY Vols., through June 30, 1865. By 2nd Lieut. Francis N. Piper (mustered in Aug. 1862, m.o. with unit 6/25/65). Four Consolidated Morning Reports, for Nov. 24 and Dec. 18, 1861 and Jan. 5 and Feb. 8, 1862. "Brigade commanded by Brig. Genl. J.J. [John] Peck, Camp Tennallytown [Tenleytown], DC." Three signed by Peck, the fourth by an aide (Wm. H. Morris). John J. Peck (1821-1878) graduated from USMA in 1843. He had service in the war with Mexico, earning a promotion to 1st Lieut. and two brevets. He resigned his commission in 1853,going to work for a proposed railroad and for a bank in Syracuse, NY. In August 1861 he was commissioned Brig. Genl. of Vols., serving in the defenses of Washington, as these reports indicate, then in the Peninsula Campaign, seeing action at Yorktown, Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, and Seven Days' battles. He was involved in the change of base to the James River, and given command of the 2nd Division, 4th Corps. He was promoted to Maj. Genl. shortly after. He commanded operations at Suffolk, VA, then defended Suffolk against Longstreet. He spent most of the later part of the war in command of North Carolina. He seems to be one of those perfectly able commanders who were not flashy enough to become household names. General Orders NO. 388, Dec. 5, 1863.
