With a ca.1856 mailing envelope addressed to Dr. Samuel Elton, Watertown, NY, which suggests this later letter was written to his widow. “The beautifully knit stocks came safely to the Genl. And you must let me send you something of ours in return. My daughter learned to knit that she might add her part to the work going on, and for her aunts and myself I had her likeness taken knitting. I send you a copy which will remind you of our appreciation of your gift and of the warm and patriotic letter accompanying it.” Written at the end of the first year of Civil War by the wife of the famous explorer and first Republican presidential candidate, who was then commanding Union troops at St. Louis. Meanwhile his wife, later renowned in her own right as a writer, remained in Washington to lobby President Lincoln for emancipation of the southern slaves. Lot Amendments Condition: Very good.
