Group of three items including one manuscript letter signed to Ulysses S. Grant and one book from Welles collection.
Comprising: 1) War-date manuscript letter signed "Gideon Welles" to on Ulysses S. Grant on navy Department Stationery (250 x 185 mm). Condition : a few clean tears at folds. Welles informs Ulysses S. Grant that appointments to the Naval Academy for the present year are filled and the young man whom Grant is recommending for the Academy will be "entered on the list of applicants and considered when appointments for the next year are to be made." Boldly signed by Welles as Secretary of the navy. 2) Regulations for the Gov. of the U.S. Navy 1865. 1865 . Washington: 1865. Condition : a few small water stains, cover slightly rubbed. Provenance : GIDEON WELLES, Secretary of the Navy dated 1861-1869 (bookplate). This volume was published during Gideon Welles' term as Secretary of the Navy and issued by his order and authored as stated on the first page. This is Welles' personal copy. 3) Report of the Secretary of the navy for 1863. Washington: 1863. Condition : rebacked preserving spine, endpapers renewed.
