Beschreibung:

Lot of 2 printed broadsides, the first 39 x 22.75 in. (sight), framed, 40.75 x 24.25 in. recruiting volunteers for the 8th Maine Infantry under the command of Colonel John D. Rust. Portland, ME: David Tucker. Second broadside, 18.75 x 26.5 in. offering a bounty of $170,000 for thirty men to join the 8th Maine Regiment commanded by Colonel John D. Rust. Camden, ME: July 22, 1862. Broadside promises "$95 in Advance! Besides bounty offered by the town!" and warns that "Drafted men get no bounty!" Broadside also reminds readers of the Fort Pulaski victory, inviting men to "share in the honors already won" by the regiment. The 8th ME Infantry was organized at Augusta, September 7, 1861. It formed part of General W.T. Sherman's expedition to Port Royal, SC, and landed at Hilton Head on November 8, 1861, where it built fortifications for several months. The regiment moved to Tybee Island and captured Fort Pulaski, suffered heavy losses at Fair Oaks, and fought at Appomattox Court House. The 8th ME mustered out at Fortress Monroe on January 18, 1866. Provenance: Property of N. Flayderman & Co. Condition: First broadside has some folds, wrinkling, and foxing on the paper. Second broadside is fully separated at central fold, with some water discoloration, brittleness at edges, and a few small holes along crease lines.
