13 items, includes 2 manuscript notebooks/diaries including a 100-page pencil written partially printed military order book with heading of Headquarters, 1863,__o'clock__M./By Command of___ being a book of hand written poetry, presumably by Lane, but unsigned, PLUS the second book also appears to be mainly poetry, but some of this has authors names at the end such as Johnson Alcott, Edward Garrett and others, ca 200pp, PLUS a manuscript letter addressed To His Excellency Abraham Lincoln, President of the the United States, dated London Heights, Va., Oct. 15, 1862 being a petition to the President on behalf of Lt. Col. James C. Lane of the 102 Regiment New York Vols. now acting as our Brigadier General for a permanent appointment & promotion to that rank signed by 3 officers of 2nd Division of the 12th Army Corps on legal sized unlined paper, PLUS letter signed by George Stoneman, Brig. Genl. Chief of Cavalry being a 3 page manuscript circular headed Circular Brig. Genl. McCall Comdg. and dealing with an attempt by Major General McClellan to fill the ranks of regiments undermanned by using soldiers in detached service from over manned units to fill depleted ranks of others., PLUS a a manuscript Poe headed Dedicated to the 102nd Regt. N.Y. Vols. By Private Charles P. Smith Co F, Acquine Creek, Va. March 17th, 1863 being a six stanza poem of 4 lines each. The 4th stanza reads Successes to our President who gives us wise laws; He's the man for the times just right for our cause; May he whip out the rebels and make them hurak?; Once more for the Union and the American Star, PLUS a very worn wooden and horse-hair brush with inset bone scrimshaw plaques, one with landscape and D. Lane and second with weeping willow tree, PLUS a Masonic burial apron in kid leather and cloth marked Walter J. Kelly/Commonwealth Lodge/No. 409, F. & A.M., 14" x 12", PLUS Wells, David A., ed. Annual of Scientific Discovery: or, Year-Book of Facts in science and Art For 1864... Boston: Gould and Lincoln, 1864. 12mo in embossed brown cloth, 351pp with ads in rear, PLUS 2 pencil drawings of an unknown mechanical device, apparently by Lane, each 5.5" x 6.5", PLUS a two 8vo pamphlets/books in printed self wraps entitled Palestine Exploration Society, Third Statement, January, 1875. Identification of Mount Pisgah, anonymous, N.Y., published by the committee, 140pp & 148pp. Oddly both are the same publication with different wraps and different page numbers, PLUS newspaper and clippings entitled Daily Chronicle-Extra, Washington Dec. 6, 1864 with text of President Lincoln's Annual Message, PLUS a charcoal enlargement portrait of Lane taken in later life, 22" 28", laid on linen and tacked to stretcher, as made, AND an hand- and machine-sewn wool flag, 96" x 144" (8' x 12') with canton having hand-sewn cotton 5-pointed stars in 7-6-6-6-6-7 pattern with 38 stars, linen hoist stenciled 8 x 12. James C. Lane of New York City joined the 102nd Van Buren Light Infantry as major in January 1862 and rose to command the "White Star" regiment during its heaviest fighting. Assigned to the 2nd Corps, Army of the Potomac the 102nd New York was baptised at Cedar Mountain in August 1862 suffering 115 casualties. The next month with morale intact the New Yorker's under Lt. Colonel Lane were sharply engaged at Antietam repelling several determined Confederates charges while in support of a friendly artillery battery. Later transferred to the 12th Corps, the regiment sustained an additional 90 men killed, wounded, and missing at Chancellorsville before counter-marching to Gettysburg where they were hard pressed until well after dark on July 2nd at a cost of 32 casualties including Colonel Lane who was wounded during the night action. In October 1863 the 12th/20th Corps was sent to the western theater as reinforcements with Lane rejoining his regiment in time to lead the attack on Lookout Mountain during the so called "battle above the clouds."
