Beschreibung:

4 1/4 x 3 1/4 in. silver gelatin photographs (light corner creasing). Period inscription on recto; ink stamped "144" on verso. Features photograph of William Mack Lee (b. 1835-?), "Body Guard & Cook, Gen. R.E. Lee" (period inscription recto) attending a Confederate reunion, wearing numerous badges and ribbons on his shirt and an apron with Robert E. Lee's likeness, while proudly waving the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. With 2 additional photographs of the same UCV reunion and parade, possibly held in Houston, TX. Virginia native William Mack Lee, self-proclaimed servant of Robert E. Lee, authored an autobiography entitled, History of the Life of Rev. Wm. Mack Lee: Body Servant of General Robert E. Lee Through the Civil War: Cook from 1861 to 1865. [1918] However, many of the claims Lee made in his "History" have been disproved, including a connection to General Lee. (Information obtained from "Black Self Publishing, A Project of the American Antiquarian Society," americanantiquarian.org, 22 January 2021.)
