Installed in a rolling programme throughout the 1990’s they have guided visitors to the many famous landmarks for which London is so well known., Cllr Robert Davis Deputy Leader of Westminster Council stated , “London is home to some of the most famous street signs in the world and buyers now have the chance to acquire a genuine piece of the capital’s history. More than 15 million visitors came to London last year and they were greeted and guided to historic locations by signs like these” , Next to each lot is the quantity of each sign being offered in this sale and the highest sealed bids received will buy the lot according to the quantity offered. For example, if there are 4 Covent Garden signs being offered, then the top 4 bids will be successful. The majority of the signs were offered, then the top 4 bids will be successful. The majority of the signs were offered in our May sale (approximately 70%) with the remainder being offered in this sale. There are also a limited number of cast iron posts available, each applied with City of Westminster plaque (see lots 58 and 59) on which the signs were originally displayed. Any buyers who purchaser four or more signs are eligible to be given a post on which to display them. The posts vary considerably in terms of condition, height and how many signs each can accommodate. Priority will be given to clients who buy the most signs. It may be necessary to have extensions made depending on how many signs buyers wish to display on the posts. Quotations are available from a local engineering firm.
