CHURCHILL, Winston Spencer (1874-1965). Autograph signature ('Winston S. Churchill') dated '10 Downing Street London' but actually signed at Cairo, 10 August 1942, in a Visitors Book inscribed on verso of front free end paper 'C[ommander]-in-C[hief]'s War Room G[eneral] H[ead] Q[uarters] Middle East Forces 1942', also signed on the end paper by George VI, Jan Smuts, Wavell, Auchinleck, Cunningham, Coningham, Moyne, Henry Duke of Gloucester and others, further signatures on four leaves dated March - December 1942 including those of Wavell and Alexander, 58 signatures altogether, an extract from a German Afrikakorps medal citation loosely inserted (Churchill signature slightly smudged). CHURCHILL IN CAIRO. Churchill, accompanied by Smuts and others, had flown out to Cairo in August 1942 to hold meetings among others with Wavell (who had flown in from India) and Auchinleck as part of the preparations for Operation Torch: it was in the course of this stay that Auchinleck was replaced as supremo of North African operations by General Alexander. On the night of 10 August he flew on to Moscow for his historic meeting with Stalin: the secrecy of his movements no doubt explains Churchill's misleading '10 Downing Street' inscription.
