"FRANCE REVISITED": CHRUCHILL LANDS ON THE NORMANDY BEACHES ON D-DAY PLUS 6 On 12 June 1944, Churchill crossed the Channel in HMS Kelvin , then transferred to an amphibious landing craft which rolled up the mulberry harbor constructed at Arromanches (Gold Beach). Field Marshal Montgomery and the commander of British forces for the landings, Lt. Gen. Miles C. Dempsey, greeted the Prime Minister at Second Army tactical headquarters--Dempsey's signature appears on the first page of the album--and Churchill signed this log with the stirring inscription, "France Revisited" and entered the dates for himself and the other two members of his party, Jan Smuts and Alan Brooke, each of whom signed in turn. During lunch with Montgomery at Creully, Churchill inquired about the likelihood of a German counter-attack--a prospect which Monty dismissed. The Field Marshal did, however, cast a nervous glance up at a German bomber under attack at that moment by Allied fighters. Montgomery's headquarters was bombed the previous night and he took Churchill's wise advice to not stay in the same position for too many nights running. Resuming his tour of the beachhead aboard Admiral Philip Vian's Scylla , Churchill was stirred by the sight of so many hundreds of Allied ships pouring men and supplies into this second--and ultimately victorious--Battle of France. Ships were still firing at German positions inland and Churchill could not resist joining the fight. "Since we are so near," he asked Vian, "why shouldn't we have a plug at them ourselves before we go home?" The ship's guns duly opened up and as Churchill reported to Roosevelt a few days later that "we went and had a plug at the hun from our destroyer, but...he did not honour us with a reply" (quoted in Gilbert, 7:807). Other signers include King George VI (16 June), Dwight Eisenhower (15 June), Bernard Law Montgomery (15 June), Trafford Leigh-Mallory (8 July), Arthur Coningham (17 July), Hastings Ismay (17 July), Neil Ritchie (2 August), Courtney Hodges (n.d.), W. H. Simpson (n.d.), Walter Bedell Smith (n.d.), Omar Bradley (n.d.), Matthew Ridgway (16 March 1945).
