Clegg, Oldham" watermark), age-toned, small tears at center fold, lower edge chipped . "MY CONSCIENCE PRICKS ME" A letter from early in his political career as Churchill expresses regret about taking leave of Oldham, the first constituency to elect him to Parliament. "...I will come by the train you suggest on Thursday morning, but I can assure you that my conscience pricks me to leave Oldham at such a critical time. Please write me any further particulars you may think necessary." Churchill had initially stood for Oldham, unsuccessfully, in July 1899, then set out for South Africa where his dramatic escape from a Boer POW camp propelled him to national prominence. The departure from his constituency was likely owing to his book and lecture tour in Britain and the U.S., which brought him desperately needed income (Members of Parliament received no salary in those years). He did not take up his seat until February 1901.
