CHURCHILL, Winston S. Typed letter signed ("W. S. Churchill") to H. Aubrey Gentry, Chartwell, 10 August 1948. 1 page, 4to, Chartwell stationery with 7 enclosed pages of typed and printed errata and corrigenda.
CHURCHILL, Winston S. Typed letter signed ("W. S. Churchill") to H. Aubrey Gentry, Chartwell, 10 August 1948. 1 page, 4to, Chartwell stationery with 7 enclosed pages of typed and printed errata and corrigenda. "I WAS SHOCKED AT SOME OF THE MISTAKES, ESPECIALLY 'POOP' FOR 'PROP.'" THE SLOPPY FIRST ENGLISH EDITION OF THE GATHERING STORM mortified Churchill. "I was shocked at some of the mistakes," he writes to his editor at Cassell, "especially 'poop' for 'prop.' I am obliged to you for the measures you have taken to correct them. I now send the final Errata and Corrigenda. I have even added one today. We must take care with the second edition, if any." The printed Errata sheet enclosed with the letter lists some 55 blunders, and the typed list contains an additional 14: "For 'death' read 'dealt.'" "For 'science' read 'scene'" etc. The "poop" error appeared on p.56, where Churchill wanted to say the French Army was the "prop of the life of France." These errors were the result of chaotic production process. The book first appeared in the U.S. under Houghton Mifflin's imprint on 21 June 1948. The English edition by Cassell appeared on October 4, but Churchill was still revising this text as late as early June. Much time was devoted to serialization of the book in Life , The New York Times , and the Daily Telegraph . In response to the errors, Churchill hired Charles C. Wood to proofread the subsequent volumes.
