Provenance: Hugh Cecil Baron Quickswood (1869-1956, presentation inscriptions in vols I-V, respectively: 'To Linky from W 1948'; 'To Linky from Winston 1954'; 'To Linky from Winston 1954'; 'To Linky from Winston 1954'; 'To Linky from Winston Birmingham Town Hall 1904 [sic]', printed facsimile presentation slips tipped onto front free endpapers of vols I and VI, manuscript note dated 21 August 1954 recording gift tipped onto upper pastedown of vol.I). Provenance : Christie's, 2 December 2003, lot 85. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION OF VOLUMES I AND III-VI, THIRD OF VOLUME II. PRESENTATION COPIES, VOLUMES I-V INSCRIBED BY CHURCHILL TO QUICKSWOOD. Best man at Churchill's wedding, Hugh Cecil or 'Linky' was a lifelong friend of Winston Churchill's. After having been recommended for a peerage by Churchill in 1941, Cecil took the title Baron Quickswood. Woods A123(b). (6)
