Original red cloth, upper cover and spine stamped in gilt (wear at top of spine, spine faded, extremities rubbed). Provenance : Hugh Cecil (1869-1956) (inscription). Second, abridged edition, PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY CHURCHILL TO HIS FUTURE BEST MAN: "Hugh Cecil from Winston S. Churchill 30. Oct. 1902." Cecil was the youngest son of Prime Minister Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, the Marquis of Salisbury. The younger Cecil won election to the House of Commons in 1895 where he befriended fellow free-trader, Winston Churchill He was the guiding spirit for an irreverent group of young MPs, the "Hughligans," and in 1908 stood as best man when Churchill married Clementine.
