Beschreibung:

CHURCHILL, Winston S. My Early Life, A Roving Commission . London: Thornton Butterworth, 1930.
CHURCHILL, Winston S. My Early Life, A Roving Commission . London: Thornton Butterworth, 1930. 8 o . Illustrated. Half-title. Original purple cloth, spine and upper cover stamped in gilt, publisher's device in blind on upper cover (spine faded, half-inch gouge on upper board). Provenance : Alfred Duff-Cooper (inscription, bookplate). FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, signed and "Inscribed by Winston S. Churchill for The Dove November 22, 1930." Properly regarded by many as Churchill's greatest book--the TLS called it "his finest literary achievement"--it conveys both his literary genius and his remarkable personality better than any other work in his vast corpus. Harold Nicholson likened the pleasure of reading it to "a beaker of Champagne." Duff Cooper was an important friend and political ally of Churchill. He served in the war cabinet in 1941 as minister in charge of Far Eastern affairs, based in Singapore. His reputation dipped after the fall of Singapore, but revived with his work as ambassador to the Free French in Algeria and then as the immensely popular first British ambassador in Paris after the Liberation. A fine association. Woods A37(a).
