FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED in first volume "To Louis Sterling from Winston S. Churchill 1947." Signed in each of the subsequent five volumes ("Winston S. Churchill") on the front fly-leaf. A fine set of Churchill's first-rate biography of his ancestor--the work that occupied him during his "Wilderness Years" in the 1930s. Sir Louis Sterling was a New York born industrialist and pioneer in the phonograph and music industry. He was one of the original directors of EMI, a leading philanthropist, and, especially during the 1930s, a tireless worker in the effort to provide asylum for Jewish refugees. Woods A40(b).
