Both were emphatic that the men out there were the best possible, no one who could be sent out from here could be better..." [ With: ] EDEN. A fine political letter touching on the Profumo scandal: "It was the unpopularity of the Government rather than the Profumo affair, which produced the Statford results"; bombing in Yemen: "it would be incredible, in any age but this, that the bombing of these unhappy tribesmen stirs scarcely a protest"; and concluding with waspish criticism of American policy in Vietnam: "The Americans are in trouble with Diem in Viet Nam. My only surprise is that it has not come sooner. The French and I did all we could in 1954 at Geneva to dissuade Dulles from selecting that man, but he was deaf to all we could say, as was his wont."
