CHURCHILL, Winston S. Document signed ("Winston S. Churchill"), 27 December 1945. United States Customs Declaration form. 1 page, folio (11¼ x 26 2/3in.) . CHURCHILL'S CUSTOMS DECLARATION FORM FOR HIS FIRST POSTWAR TRIP TO THE U.S.A. U. S. immigration law required all arriving ship passengers to complete this Customs declaration form before departing from their home port. Churchill complies two weeks before he is scheduled to set sail on the Queen Elizabeth to visit his friend Col. Frank Clarke in Miami Beach, Florida. This will also be the visit in which he travels to Fulton, Missouri to deliver his famous "Iron Curtain" speech. He affirms to the U. S. government that he has never been in prison or an almshouse, is not "a polygamist, an anarchist" or "a person who believes in or advocates the overthrow by force or violence of the Government of the United States." Under the section "Whether ever before in the United States; and if so when and where? (Last residence or visit only)," he writes "Sept. 1944, Hyde Park, D.C., 2 days only." Interestingly, under "nearest Relative or friend in Country whence passenger came," Churchill enters his brother "Major John Spencer Churchill D.S.O." Provenance : Sotheby's 23 July 1984, lot 310.
