CHURCHILL, Winston S. Autograph letter signed ("Winston S. Churchill"), to Mrs. Cyril Patterson, Chartwell, Kent, 4 November 1932. 1 page, 8vo, Chartwell stationery, discreet repairs on verso to center fold . AN ELOQUENT LETTER OF CONDOLENCE TO THE WIDOW OF CHURCHILL'S FORMER PILOT "It is with sorrow," Churchill writes, "that I learn of the death of your gallant husband for whom I had a deep regard. I feel that his untimely end is only a part of the devoted sacrifices which he made for our country during its years of peril. I offer you my profound sympathy in your irreparable loss..." Lt. Patterson won the Military Cross for action with the Royal Flying Corps at Suvla Bay. In 1918 he was Churchill's pilot across the French war zone, and in a 10 June letter that year to Clementine, Churchill said of him, "the young flying officer has won my heart...He is very gallant & very battered."
