CHURCHILL, Winston S. Autograph letter signed ("Winston S. Churchill") to Sir Robert Perks (1849-1934), Whitehall, 13 February 1918. 1 page, 8vo, Munitions Ministry stationery . CHURCHILL SMOOTHS OVER A MISHAP WITH A LEADING METHODIST in this war-date letter to Perks: "I am much obliged to you for your letter," Churchill writes, "& for the account you give me of yr interview. This completely reverses the impression I had sustained as to yr attitude towards me. These are difficult times & it is no wonder misunderstandings arise." Perks, a prominent lawyer and businessman and former M.P., was also a major financial supporter of the Methodist Church. The two men locked horns when Perks thought the government was going to convert Wesleyan Hall, Kingsway, London, into a space for government offices. It did not.
