CHURCHILL, Winston S. Autograph letter signed to [his cousin] Ivor [Guest, later 1st Viscount Wimborne], 35a Great Cumberland Place, 25 October 1898, 2½ pages, 4to . HIS FIRST POLITICAL ADDRESSES. Churchill refers to reports of his speeches in the press, 'The speeches were successful but I hope to make considerable progress with practice'; he has postponed his return to India, and hopes to see Guest in Paris, where the Dreyfus Affair is at its peak, 'You must have witnessed some strange scenes in the last few days. A democracy gone wrong is a terrible spectacle'; he concludes with an admission of his essentially Stoic nature, 'the only difference between us the other night was one which has long agitated the world. You follow Epicurus, I incline to Zeno. There is nobility in both. But I think more vitality in the second'. Writings of Sir Winston Churchill © Estate of Winston S. Churchill
