Churchill"), 1919. 4 o , 94 leaves, signatures only on rectos of leaves 2-6; brown morocco, gilt cover and endpapers. With accompanying folder of 26 photographs of Churchill visiting the Army of Occupation, August 1919. CHURCHILL IN THE RHINELAND visits and inspects the British troops at Cologne in August 1919, in his capacity as Secretary of State for War. He signed this visitor's book at the Army college dedicated to teaching skilled trades to the soldiers. In his remarks to the troops (according to a contemporary newspaper report), Churchill particularly praised the women who assisted the Army: "If the war had continued longer, it is certain that women would have been employed in the front line as signalers, telegraphists and clerks." The Army of the Rhine occupied Cologne from 1918 to 1926. They were credited by the local population--especially Cologne's mayor, and future West German chancellor, Konrad Adenauer--with conducting a liberal and humane occupation, in contrast to the French. Perhaps as a consequence of this, the city contained a sizeable anti-Nazi bloc even after Hitler's assumption of power in 1933. Together 2 items . (2)
