ALWAYS A WINNER: CHURCHILL’S STUD FARM AND HIS SUCCESS RACING THOROUGHBREDS The Prime Minister indulges in the sport of Kings, as we see Churchill relishing his last career: a thoroughbred race horse owner. 22 October 1950: “ Colonist really has been a tremendous success, and I think it redounds very much to your credit that you originally thought so highly of him…” 24 November 1954: “I am most touched by your kind offer to look after the health of my horses free of charge, but I really do not feel I can accept such generosity.” He points out that the horses he keeps at Chartwell, Epsom and Newmarket will require close care and “I really would not feel able to call on your services to the extent that I may need if you were not making me a charge.” 14 May 1955: “I shall be very glad if you will take charge of my stud farm at New Chapel.” He offers Foster £1,000 a year on a three-year engagement. “Although our relations are such that I do not think it likely there will be any disagreements between us…it is better to have a written agreement.” 5 March 1957: "I look forward to seeing Sayala and the new foals… Sayala sounds an excellent buy…” 9 October 1957: “I have been so pleased at our recent victories, and, indeed, I think this year’s racing has been very satisfactory.” 26 December 1963: “How very kind of you to send me the fine photograph of High Hat . I am indeed glad to have it..."
