Provenance : Pamela, Countess of Lytton; and by descent. THE DEATH OF A GOLDEN BOY. A heartbreaking evocation of the funeral at Knebworth of Pamela's elder son Antony: Churchill would happily comply with a request to memorialise the occasion if he could. But he retains only one impression: 'Your face transfixed in the sunset, conquering grief & comprehending Fate, as I saw you emerge from the old gateway behind the coffin which bore your hopes & your gallant son to a soldier's grave. That indeed I record as a blessed vision of a consolation which I trust and pray still abides in your heart'. Antony, Viscount Knebworth, died on 1 May 1933 in a flying accident. He had been seen as a paragon of a certain chivalric ideal, and the memorial volume to him, Antony, Viscount Knebworth. A Record of Youth (1935) made a deep impression on contemporary readers.
