The first two volumes, bound together of the important second edition of Holinshed's Chronicles. William Shakespeare used this revised second edition of the Chronicles as the source for most of his history plays, the plot of Macbeth, and for portions of King Lear and Cymbeline. This copy with the original, uncanceled states of signatures Qq, Rr and Ss in volume 2. This copy has not been fully collated by us, but is known to lack the title page and preliminaries of the first volume (all of signature A and B1-2, the text beginning on p.7), Pp. 35-36 (D5), and C1 of the second collatation; volume 2 title page present, but lacks the subsequent title page following A1, also V6 (pp-240-241), and 22 leaves at the end of the book, being the index or table. Lot Amendments Condition: Binding well worn, spine torn, shaken, a number of leaves loose; some pages with wear and creasing at edges, a few with portions torn out; still an interesting example of a rare and important book, in period binding.
