Inserted substitute title in elegant cursive hand. Spanish text in two columns. Tailpieces, marginal notes. (Folio in 6s) 27.3x19 cm (10¾x7½"), period full vellum lettered by hand on spine, leather loops but missing attachment buttons, edges speckled. First Edition. A scarce chronicle of the history of the Franciscan missions within the Real Audiencia of Charcas, a province which included locations in Peru, Bolivia, and Paraguay. OCLC/WorldCat cites only 3 copies. A first edition copy was last seen at auction in 1953. Institutional plate from Harvard University with embossments from Harvard and the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Mass on tipped-in substitute title and leaves. Lacks engraved title page by Pedro Villafranca Malagón and one or more leaves at rear. Some leaves at beginning likely absent as well. OCLC listings indicate a pagination as follows: [30], 601, [6] p. Sabin 47835. Deaccessioned Harvard University copy. Donated to the South American collection by Archibald Cary Coolidge (Professor of History at Harvard College, the first Director of the Harvard University Library, a scholar in international affairs, a member of the United States Foreign Service, and editor-in-chief of the policy journal Foreign Affairs) and Clarence Leonard Hay (son of John Hay, Secretary of State) to commemorate the Pan American Scientific Congress held in Santiago, Chile in 1908. From the library of Luis Montt (son of Manuel Montt Torres, and brother of Pedro Montt Montt, both Presidents of Chile). Lot Amendments Condition: Vellum rippled showing some soiling; damptaining throughout although text remains legible, last 3 leaves with extensive repairs around edges (at least one of which is the cut edge of a recycled manuscript), some uneven trimming; good.
