CHRIST IN MAJESTY BLESSING. Historiated initial 'L', cut from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT CHOIR BOOK ON VELLUM [Florence, Attavante di Attavanti, circa 1500] Initial 195 x 148mm, leaf 318 x 218mm. Christ as a young man with blond hair and light beard, standing, his hand raised in blessing, on blue ground, within a yellow and blue frame with white tracery and burnished gold border with purple and green foliage, foliate extension and floral decoration in outer margin. Surrounded by text and music on 4 red staves, 4 lines of music with text on verso. The pale colours and controlled elegance of the drawing are characteristic of Attavante's mature style. The figure is particularly close to illuminations in a Diurno domenicale executed by Attavante for the convent of Santa Maria degli Angeli (now Bibl. Laurenziana Cor.4), for which he was paid in 1505 (cf. Levi d'Ancona, Miniature e miniatori a Firenze (1962) p.256. A miniature by Attavante from Santa Maria degli Angeli, now in the Wildenstein collection is reproduced in Garzelli, Miniatura fiorentina del Rinascimento (1985) no. 861. From the Martello collection. Cf. Catalogue by M.Boskovits, Florence 1985, pp. 114-115, with colour plate.
