Chinese School, circa 1800 The Trades of China: an album of bodycolour drawings on Chinese paper, titled 'A Collection of Drawings Illustrating the Trades of China by Artists of that Nation'. [no place but Canton?; no date but 1808 or earlier]. Large folio (520 x 415mm.). Mounted calligraphic manuscript title, 116 mounted bodycolours (each 285 x 285mm.), the mounts numbered 1-134 (missing sheets 7,17,21,23,25,42,45,52,63,69,75,78,103,111,112, 116,122 and 133), all within contemporary ruled borders. Contemporary and straight-grained morocco gilt by L. Staggemeier, covers with elaborate border made up from numerous filets and decorative roll tools, spine in seven compartments with double raised bands, lettered in the second ' TRADES OF CHINA ' and in the fifth ' ORIGINAL DRAWINGS ', the other compartments with elaborate repeat decoration made up from numerous small tools, gilt turn-ins, brown end papers, gilt edges. (scuffed at extremities, upper joints slightly split, upper cover with some surface damage to leather).
