A printed label on the reverse of the frame describes the subject: 'these festivals are held on the fifth day of the fifth month as birthday celebrations, when large paper balloons, shaped like carp, are flown from house tops, and carried in procession. The legend is that the carp, or fish which could surmount a waterfall, became a glorious dragon, and thus if the boys were to get on in the world, they too must surmount obstacles.'
