CHINA -- JOAN BLAEU (1596-1673) and MARTINUS MARTINI (1614-1661)
CHINA -- JOAN BLAEU (1596-1673) and MARTINUS MARTINI (1614-1661) Novus atlas sinensis a martino martinio . [Amsterdam: 1655]. 2° (465 x 300mm). German text, hand-coloured engraved architectural title, 17 hand-coloured engraved double-page maps, versos blank. Contemporary panelled vellum gilt (vellum stained, ties lacking). A FINE GERMAN EDITION OF THE FIRST EUROPEAN ATLAS OF CHINA. Martini based his highly regarded survey on the Ming revision of the Yü t'u, unlike d'Anville's atlas which used Jesuit surveys. D'Anville notes in his Mémoire : 'Martini made use of the maps which the Chinese possessed at the time. They do great honour to that nation and make them superior in this connection to any other Asian people' (Lust, pp.25-26). The hand-coloured double-page maps consist of a general map of China, 15 maps of the provinces, and a map of Japan. This Atlas, published as part VI of Blaeu's Theatrum orbis terrarum , also includes Golius' Catayo and Martini's Historia von den Tartarischen krieg , and as with many copies does not have the main title. Cf. Cordier 182; Koeman I, BL 55; cf. Lust 160.
