The iconography of this sculpture is already testified in Dehua production around the mid 17th century. In the variant of the deity without the child in her arms, it is in fact illustrated in a corner of the map of China contained in the 1667 edition of the Nieuw Atlas by Willem and Joan Blaeuw, published for the first time in 1655 on the model of the atlas of the Jesuit Martino Martini of 1651.
