The Ah Fong Studio was established in Hong Kong in 1859; other branches, including Shanghai, were opened as the staff at the studio received training from early western photographers in China. The Second Sino-Japanese War began in August 1937 with Japanese artillery and aerial bombing laying waste to much of the city; eventually the Chinese forces withdrew to Nanking following a siege of three months. The photos depict, in brutal reality, the damage and loss of life caused by the Japanese attacks, both to buildings and inhabitants, as well as images of Chinese and Japanese soldiers, Japanese bombers, American marines, US and British warships seeking to evacuate foreign nationals and the Japanese “Victory” parade. According to the text, the photographs were taken during the siege by "S.S." and "S.C.S." during the Sino-Japanese hostilities in Shanghai from August to November 1937. The first album is accompanied in this lot by a second modern album containing a further 28 vintage photographs of the same period showing war-damaged streets and buildings by unknown photographers.
