A pair of linen samplers, by Mary Steuart Powell and Sarah Steuart Powell, 1810, worked in fine cross-stitch and eyelet embroidery in blue thread, with alphabets at head, quotations entitled 'Kindness' and 'On Education' respectively, and name and date (with day and month) at foot, each with the address '21 The Mall, Clifton', both with some additional stitching trials to left hand side in various colours (hearts, Greek key border, cross, etc.), linen toned, first item with one or two small holes (just clipping a few threads), second item with stitching slightly faded, both 30.5 x 30.5cm (12 x 12ins), matching frames, glazed Unusual to find a pair of samplers worked by sisters. Sarah Steuart Powell (1801-1884) and her sister Mary (dates untraced) were both christened on 26th August, 1801, at St. Augustine the Less in Bristol. Sarah married Daniel Fripp on 12th October, 1818, at Westbury-on-Trym, Gloucestershire. The quotations read: 'Kindness. The gentle offices of patient love,/Beyond all flattery and all price above,/The mild forbearance of another's fault,/The taunting words suppress'd as soon as thought:/On these heaven bade the bliss of life depend,/And crush'd ill Fortune when he made a Friend/'; 'On Education. If Good we plant not, Vice will fill the mind,/And weeds despoil the space for flowers design'd/The human heart ne'er knows a state of rest;/Bad tends to worse, and better leads to best:/We either gain or lose, we sink or rise, Nor rests our struggling Nature till she dies.'
