Model history The Chevrolet Corvette saw the light of day at the 1953 Motorama, the itinerant show for General Motors products, the idea coming from Harley Earl, GM's head of their Art and Color Department who sought to produce an American counterpart to the imported Jaguar XK 120. Until then America had been without a real post war sports car. It was the first quantity produced car to use a fibreglass body and was initially fitted with a straight six cylinder engine producing 150bhp through a 2 speed Powerglide automatic gearbox. Only three years later did the V8 option become available, together with a 3 and later 4 speed manual transmission and wind up windows. With first year sales at a mere 315 units, Chevrolet had to wait till 1960 for the model to make the company a profit by passing the 10,000 production mark for the year. Specific history of this car Our car was delivered new with the ultimate specification for the year including a 4 speed manual gearbox, the first in an American car for many years, and it is fitted with dual four barrel Carter carburetors. It was restored to a very high standard a few years ago by the renowned Carrosserie Lecoq in Paris and has only covered a few thousand kilometers since. It was acquired by the vendor in 1999, who successfully finished the 2000 edition of the well known Rallye Classic du Maroc. Condition The car's condition is commensurate with the extremely high standard of its restoration.
