Engraved portrait frontispiece, title printed in red and black, folding engraved map, 42 engraved plates (?only, of 44), almost all double-page or folding, with 2 extra lithographed plates from another work inserted. (First few leaves detaching, a few repairs, some plates browned, some marginal worming at end, occasional light spotting and staining.) Contemporary panelled calf, gilt-stamped armorial on covers with motto "Vestigia nulla Retrorsum", gilt edges (rather worn, rebacked preserving old spine, large strip torn away from upper cover). Provenance : pasted to the foot of the frontispiece portrait is an autograph fragment inscribed: "Sealed & delivered in the presence of us. H. Chauncy." An early note beside it reads: "Autograph of Sir H. Chauncy taken from an old Deed by George Earl of Essex." Brunet I, 1827: "Un des ouvrages les plus rares de ceux qui traitent de la topographie de l' Angleterre ..."; Lowndes 430: "... this much esteemed county history ..."; Upcott 333; Wing C3741. Contains the three plates which Lowndes asserts are "usually wanting."
