CHATEAUBRIAND, François-René, vicomte de. Lettres sur Rome. Paris: Henri Creuzevault, 1935. 2° (422 x 320mm). Copper-engraved title vignette, a double-page view of Rome and 22 full-page ilustrations, nine wood-engraved initials or tailpieces, all by Albert Decaris with an original black-wash and pencil drawing for the illustration facing page 40 and a duplicate suite on Maillol paper of the 22 full-page engravings and the double-page plate, extra-illustrated with a refusée view of the interior of the Pantheon. BINDING DESIGNED BY PAUL BONET, bound by René Desmules and finished by André Jeanne, in 1932: light purple crushed levant morocco, the covers with an overall design inspired by an acanthus leaf: volutes of various sizes composed of curved gilt fillets, emanating from a large circle of gilt fillets, flanked by broad blind lines, the fillets radiating around a circular nucleus of white calf outlined in blind, the flat-backed spine lettered in gilt, a continuation of the blind lines delineating a compartment at the foot of the spine containing the artists name, light brown boxcalf doublures and endleaves, original pictorial wrappers bound-in, g.e., leather-lined light-purple morocco-backed and edged chemise, the spine tooled as the spine of the binding, morocco-edged slipcase, signed on front doublure: Paul Bonet, and dated, on rear doublure: 1938. Provenance : Adelin Remy (bookplate). "UNE SOMPTUEUSE RELIURE": the first of Bonet's volute series of bindings on a book containing some very fine views of Rome. The edition limited to 188 copies on Rives paper, this number 4 of 25 copies with an original design and an additional suite of first state illustrations. The binding, designed in February 1938, was described by Bonet: "décor filets d'or se developpant en volute - la composition étant centrée à la base... une sompteuse reliure, le point de départ de l'idée créatrice était une feuillet d'acanthe que pourrait le deviner." The work prints Chateaubriand's letters to Joseph Joubert between June 3, and December 24, 1803; a long letter to the Marquis Louis de Fontanes of January 10, 1804; and the letters to Madame de Recamier written between January 3 and May 16, 1829. Bonet Carnets 386.
