THE 1961 VINTAGE IN BORDEAUX ***** "A great vintage often compared to the 1945 for the two have several things in common. First of all, nature did the pruning: frosts severly reducing the potential crop in 1945 and heavy rain washing away the pollen in 1961. Though there was persistent rain in July, there was a drought in August, followed by a very sunny September, which resulted in a harvest of small, thick-skinned, well-nourished grapes in turn producing deeply coloured, ripe but concentrated and tannic wines. Opinions vary, some sure of the '61s' superiority, some--as I do--considering the '45s greater. The risk is that the tannin will outlive the fruit. Nevertheless, some fabulous wines were made. *****" MB, Vintage Wine Château Pichon-Longueville, Baron Château Pichon-Longueville Baron was built as it stands today by Raoul de Pichon Longueville. In 1933 it was purchased by the Bouteiller family and sold to the AXA Millésimes, the French insurance conglomerate in 1988. AXA Millésimes hired Jean-Michel-Cazes to manage the estate and he completely restored the château to its former glory. Cazes retired in 2001 and was replaced by Christian Seely, and Englishman who has continued in the tradition of excellence begun by his predecessor. CA Château Pichon-Longueville, Baron--Vintage 1961 Pauillac, 2me cru classé In original wooden case "My earliest notes, from mid-1960s to mid-1970s, all English-bottled, were good, but of three château bottlings in the 1980s, two were decidedly 'pricked', with high volatile acidity which left, literally, a sour taste in my mouth. Saved by a decent bottle in 1992 and, most recently, impressively deep, its nose a pleasant surprise: fruit, vanilla, a fragrant jamminess matched by its flavour. Overall lean, spicy, with good grip but not too tannic." Last noted at the La Reserve tasting conducted March 1989 **** Drink soon MB, Vintage Wine 24 half-bottles per lot
