Château Pétrus--Vintage 1959
1 bottle per lot
PETRUS So recent in Pétrus' fame that at the end of the war, with the remarkable 1945 vintage safely in barrel, hardly a buyer of Médoc wine even knew about this obscure little estate near Libourne. The great post-war champion of Pétrus - indeed of Pomerol generally - was the late Ronald Avery, head of Avery's of Bristol. By buying up many of the post-war vintages, some in bottle, others in cask, he set forth a plan to put Pétrus and Pomerol in the mind of wine buyers. The other major personality in the history of Pétrus is the legendary negociant Jean-Pierre Moueix, the sole agent for Pétrus since 1947, who also inherited a portion of the estate in 1961 (the balance went to two nieces of the late owner, Madame Loubat). Three years later Moueix purchased one of the nieces' share and effectively became the man in charge. Jean-Pierre's son, Christian now runs the estate and is the face of Pétrus worldwide. Recently removed from excellent cellarage Château Pétrus--Vintage 1959 Pomerol, cru exceptionnel. Château-bottled Ex-Nicolas. Bin-soiled label. Level upper-shoulder Tasting note: Not tasted in its youth but predictably sweet and fleshy when first noted in 1972. Showing well in 1990 and 1993, and, the following year at the very useful Wolf/Weinart paired tasting whem . though a big, rich wine, fully mature, it did not quite match the magnificent splendour of the '61. Last tasted Nov 1994 ***** Time in hand Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine 1 bottle per lot
