Château Latour--Vintage 1990
1 dozen bottles per lot
1990 BORDEAUX The 1990 vintage, nestled between 1982 and 2000, is sometimes lost in the conversation of the greatest vintages of the 20th century, perhaps unfairly. While it trades at prices markedly lower than 1982 and 2000, the 1990 wines drink as well, if not better, than their more expensive counterparts presently. On the surface, the vintages share much in common. All were very hot with a dash of rain in September, all produced large crop levels and all displayed uniform strong quality from top to bottom, left to right. Judging by published commentary on the vintage, '90 seems to have confused people as it performed well from a young age without ever entering a "dumb phase" as many great wines do, leading many to suspect it as vintage for short-term ageing. At a recent retrospective of 1990 wines across all of the major communes in Bordeaux organized by Christie's, the wine of the night was undoubtedly Chateau Latour, full of blackcurrants and plums with easily a decade left to go. Five hours after a double decant, the Latour continued to gain traction and power. Following, you will find a veritable roll-call of some of the finest wines of the vintage: La Conseillante, Cheval Blanc and the inimitable Latour, all purchased on release and held in temperature controlled storage undisturbed for two decades. Château Latour--Vintage 1990 Pauillac, 1er cru classé Lot 16 levels: into neck Lots 17-18 levels: bottom neck or better All lots in original wooden cases, 16 missing lid Parcel: lots 17-18 "Although there was some bottle variation, the best of the '90 Latour at a recent tasting was definitely among the wines of the night, with a forward, lovely blackberry/currant fruit character on the initial attach, but a very dense, compact structure on the palate that hints at years of development to come. The texture was rich, almost viscous, and the finish was quite long. A great success." CC, February 2010 1 dozen bottles per lot
