Second Session 5 March 2011 12.00 AM Lots 500-843 THE VINTAGE WINE FUND Presenting the collection of the Vintage Wine Fund In the second day of our sale, Christie's is delighted to bring you an offering from The Vintage Wine Fund, a wine investment fund that is on the cutting edge of wine investment. Formed by Andrew Davison in 2003, the fund has been sourcing top wines direct from the chateaux who produce them as well as the negociants and importers who form the core of the fine wine business. Mr. Davison was educated at Cambridge and worked at Deutsche Bank prior to moving to the wine trade in 2001. Although the Fund that he established invests in top wines from many different regions, today's offering focuses on the best of Bordeaux. In Mr. Davison's own words: "Back in 2003, when the Vintage Wine Fund was established, the wine market and in particular the wine investment market was very different from today, and the arrival of a wine investment fund run by a former investment banker and a former money broker therefore raised a few eyebrows amongst the gentle folk of the wine trade. Was this some sort of new wine hedge fund? However, they need not have worried. Far from being a pair of ex city bankers looking to make a quick buck from just another market, I and my partner were in fact two passionate wine enthusiasts with the ambition of establishing a company which, while benefiting from the professionalism and discipline learned in our previous careers, would always reflect the reasons for our starting it in the first place - a love of fine wine and in particular the best Bordeaux. In the early days, we spent a lot of time talking to - and sharing many bottles with - chateau owners, winemakers and negociants describing our vision. First and foremost we would only buy wines that we personally knew well and loved; we talked of our determination to only buy wines in perfect condition; we would store them in the very best environment and ensure they matured perfectly and fulfilled all the potential their creators, both earthly and otherwise, had put into them; when the time came to sell, we would endeavour to distribute widely to wine lovers worldwide. The benefits of buying directly ex chateau is of course clear and we were fortunate to make many friends in those early days which proved vital in enabling us to access wonderful parcels of both young and older wines direct from the cellars of the chateaux. Indeed the great majority of all our acquisitions have been ex chateau." With an eye to maximizing value, Mr. Davison has purchased only wines of impeccable provenance and pristine condition. These wines have been cellared under the finest and most scrupulously maintained conditions at underground storage Octavian warehouse in Corsham, England, the world's premier wine storage facility, and accordingly the condition of the wines is nothing short of thrilling, as the examples to be tasted in sale room will testify. This sale provides the collector the opportunity to purchase with absolute confidence the finest wines available today from a range of the best vintages. If you have any questions about any of the lots in today's portion, we welcome your inquiries. LATOUR Described by Thomas Jefferson following his first visit to Bordeaux in May 1787, as one of the "4 vineyards of first quality," La Tour de Segur, as it was then known has a very long and distinguished history. It's famous tower and vineyards are in full view - albeit at some distance - from the ships plying the broad Gironde and are close to the small town of Pauillac. It's recent history, but not the quality of the wine, has been a bit checkered, the de Beaumont Family selling in 1962 its majority stake, to Lord Cowdray's family and Harveys of Bristol who considerably later sold to Allied Domecq. It's current proud owner is Mr. Francois Pinault who also, coincidentally, now owns Christie's. Château Latour--Vintage 1982 Pauillac, 1er cru classé. Château
