Château Latour--Vintage 1961
4 bottles per lot
AN IMPRESSIVE DUO OF RARITY 1961 A memorable year that began with America's youngest ever President, John F. Kennedy, taking office that January. By April, Yuri Gagarin conquers space, the race to the moon begins. Before year's end The Berlin Wall will be erected and the great American writer, Ernest Hemingway, will have passed on. All of this and more happend during one of the greatest post-war Bordeaux vintages on record. THE VINTAGE "A great vintage often compared to the 1945 for the two have several things in common. First of all, nature did the pruning: frosts severely reducing the potential crop in 1945 and heavy rain washing away the pollen in 1961. Though there was persistent rain in July, there was a drought in August, followed by a very sunny September, which resulted in a harvest of small, thick-skinned, well-nourished grapes in turn producing deeply coloured, ripe but concentrated and tannic wines. Opinions vary, some sure of the '61s superiority, some -- as I do -- considering the '45s greater. The risk is that the tannin will outlive the fruit. Nevertheless some fabulous wines made." MB, Vintage Wine Château Latour needs no introduction in this vintage, it has been a top selection for the vintage for over a half century. Finding bottles of top provenance and with excellent ullage however is a challenge and that makes the following bottles exceptional and rare. Château Latour à Pomerol is in an elite category of fine and rare wine: The most famous wine you've never had . Pomerols in general are greatly admired by the Northern European countries. It is not unusual to find Latour à Pomerol bottled by a Belgian merchant. Finding bottles of top provenance and with excellent ullage however is a challenge. An even more rare occurance is finding this wine Château Bottled . The lot before you satifies these conditions for excellence. Property of a Gentleman Both lots recently removed by Christie's from a temperature and humidity controlled, private, below ground level, home cellar. Château Latour--Vintage 1961 Pauillac, 1er cru classé Levels: top shoulder; bin soiled labels, original capsules, one stained label "Port-like, with an unctuous texture, and a dark garnet color with considerable amber at the edge, the 1961 Latour possesses a viscosity and thickness. One of the three bottles served at the Chateau's tasting revealed a surprisingly aggressive, minty, herbaceous nose, but the other two bottles were liquid perfection, exhibiting fragrant, cedary, truffle, leather, mineral, and sweet, jammy aromatics, full-bodied, voluptuous textures, exquisite purity and concentration, and a layered, highly-nuanced finish that represents the essence of compellingly great wine. The 1961 has been fully mature for over 15 years, but it seems to get richer, holding onto its succulence and fat, and developing more aromatic nuances without losing any sweetness or concentration. An extraordinary wine, it is unquestionably one of the Bordeaux legends of the century! Anticipated maturity: now-2025" Robert Parker Wine Advocate Issue 129, June 2000 4 bottles per lot
