Fine and Rare Wines September 24, 2010 Dear Client, Welcome to our first sale of the Fall season. We hope you've had a great summer; we've spent ours putting together a vast array of wines for your bidding pleasure. I'm pleased to say this sale contains several prominent and exciting consignments, containing the market-friendly young Bordeaux, the elusive aged Burgundy and even a few esoteric curiosities for those clients with curious palates. We lead the sale (lots 1-36) with an absolutely pristine collection of young Bordeaux. Arranged by vintage for ease in bidding, this consignor amassed almost exclusively 2003s, 2004s, and 2005s across only the best wines. Following is a consignment from a very prominent collector featuring pristine Bordeaux and top shelf Califonia wine. Highlights from this consignment include 1982 Mouton, 1989 Haut Brion and parcels of 2000 Mouton and Cheval Blanc. From the new world, we present Harlan estate in blockbuster vintages 1994 and 1997 among others. Following are consignments featuring 2000 Bordeaux (114-120), Lafite (121-130) and well cellared pristine Bordeaux and Coche Dury (131-165). All lead up to three two-bottle lots of the legendary 1990 Romanée-Conti., one of the jewels of the sale. This segues nicely into a consignment I'm very excited about, lots 187-292. Mostly bought on release, many of the old DRC and Leroy is pristine. Most astonishingly, the 1978 La Tâche (lot 195), the 1979 Romanée-Conti (lot 189) and the 1979 DRC Montrachet (lot 200) all contain consecutively numbered bottles. Lest you think this is a "Bordeaux only" sale, please don't miss lots 294-362, featuring a a deep collection of Vega Sicilia, much of which is in large format include several very rare double-magnums of the flagship Unico. We finish up the sale with several more collections of classic Bordeaux, Burgundy, Italian wines and even a smattering of Champagne. All in all, this robust sale of 805 lots is a fantastic way to kick off our fall season. Should you have any questions about the auction or any of the wines in this catalog, please don't hesitate to contact me or my team of specialists. Should you require a photo of a lot, please contact us at least a week before the sale. Sincerely, Charles Curtis MW Vice President Head of North American Wine Sales PRISTINE BORDEAUX Removed from custom home storage for this sale, these wines are youthful and undamaged by age. Even the cellar itself had a floor so clean you could eat off of it (we didn't). There is hardly a nicked, bin soiled or stained label in the bunch, so bid with confidence. Wines are arranged by vintage. 2003 BORDEAUX "After twenty-five years of tasting the newest Bordeaux vintage at approximately six months of age, I have never seen a year as irregular and fascinating as 2003. This is not surprising given the historic extremes of weather France endured in June, July, and August, 2003. The marketplace perception is that this is an exceptional vintage with a personality not dissimilar from such hot vintages as 1990, 1982, and possibly ancient years such as 1959 and 1947. While there are offerings that recall the 1982s or 1990s at a similar stage (fortunately, I am not old enough to have tasted the 1947s or 1959s at six months of age), the 2003 vintage is different for many reasons. The most striking feature about the eight days I spent tasting the 2003s was that I felt like I was tasting five or six different vintages, a sentiment I never before experienced. Some wines were reminiscent of 1990, a few of 1982, but others had more in common with 1991, 1989, and 1975. The vintage is frightfully irregular, but some profoundly great wines were produced, particularly in the most favored sector, the northern Médoc." Robert Parker #152 (Apr 04) Château Lafite-Rothschild--Vintage 2003 Pauillac, 1er cru classé 6 bottles per lot
